The current museum, composed of the former 17th-century seminary and its 13th-century chapel, requires a complete transformation to meet the conservation needs of the famous Tapestry and the expectations of visitors. The current layout limits the optimization of visitor flows, the presentation of the masterpiece, and the development of scientific and cultural services.
This operation includes the renovation and restructuring of all existing buildings, as well as the creation of an extension dedicated to the linear display of the Tapestry on an inclined plane, ensuring its preventive conservation. The architectural design will pay special attention to urban and landscape integration while respecting heritage protections, notably the classification of the former chapel and the listing of the old seminary and its historic staircase in the ISMH.
Work will begin in November 2025, with delivery scheduled for September 2027. The total programmed area of the project is approximately 7,250 m² of floor space, including 2,400 m² of extension.
Beyond architecture and conservation, the project will also include a landscaped redevelopment of the museum’s surroundings, offering visitors an enhanced experience from the moment they arrive. The ambition is to create a 21st-century museum capable of showcasing the Bayeux Tapestry in a modern, accessible, and historically respectful setting.
Congratulations to all the teams involved in the design and preparation of this exceptional project, whose construction will soon begin and will help to highlight Bayeux’s remarkable heritage!
