Schloesing relief road opens in Marseille

On 3 October 2023, the Société Marseillaise du Tunnel Prado Carénage (SMTPC) opened the new Schloesing underground relief road. This 845-metre road section links the A50 motorway and the Prado Carénage tunnel free of charge with Boulevard Schloesing.

A new route to unblock traffic and develop soft forms of mobility

The first stage in the programme to develop Marseille’s eastern sector, this new arterial route improves service to the city’s southern and eastern districts, as well as Line 3 of the tramway.

The aim is to gradually improve road traffic flows, reduce journey times, and develop soft forms of mobility above ground, to make the city more connected and promote social and regional cohesion.

As creation of the Schloesing relief road required alterations to the 26th Centenary Park, landscaping work is planned to restore the site and create a new green corridor in the heart of Marseille.

Choosing a public service delegation

As part of its concession contract, SMTPC is responsible for the finance, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the Schloesing link, an extension to the Prado Carénage tunnel. To finance the total investment of close to €100 million, the concession contract was extended by seven years and four months into 2033.

SMTPC entrusted the works to a design-build consortium led by GTM Sud alongside Eiffage Génie Civil, Eiffage Énergie Systèmes and Santerne.

The operation took 40 months prior to commissioning on 7 October 2023.
